Quetiapine, commonly sold under the brand name Seroquel, is a type of prescription medication called an antipsychotic drug. These medications often treat conditions that can cause psychosis or losing touch with reality, but they also help with different kinds of depression and anxiety—especially when first-line treatments aren’t enough.
There are two types of antipsychotic drugs. “Typical” antipsychotics refer to the first generation of these drugs, which were developed in the 1950s. “Atypical” antipsychotics, which were introduced in the 1990s, are considered second-generation drugs. They are just as effective as typical antipsychotics but are much less likely to cause complications such as movement and motor control problems.
Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic. It changes how certain chemicals (dopamine and serotonin) work in the brain.
Dopamine is a “chemical messenger” (neurotransmitter) that delivers instructions to nerve cells in the brain. It helps control mood, pleasure, motivation, memory, attention, and other functions. Serotonin is also a chemical messenger. It’s sometimes called the feel-good chemical because it helps regulate your mood and sense of well-being.
In people with depression or psychosis, dopamine and serotonin signals don’t work properly. Quetiapine works by blocking these abnormal signals.

The manufacturer of Seroquel XR (quetiapine fumarate) has agreed to pay $1.4bn (£0.5bn) to settle a lawsuit brought by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in a high-profile settlement that would have affected the company’s ability to produce and market its drug.
Seroquel XR, the branded version of the antipsychotic drug, is the generic version of AstraZeneca’s “first” drug to address mood disorders, but in the UK Seroquel XR is still available by prescription in both the UK and the US.
The settlement, announced by the British giant, could mean GSK could now face a total of $4bn (£2.4bn) in settlements for its UK and US product.
The settlement is the first in a series of multibillion-dollar settlements in the life sciences industry, including Seroquel XR, to be paid by GSK.
The company had been trying to make a name for itself in the field of antipsychotic drugs, but the settlement has now been completed and will pay GSK £500m.
“This is an important settlement,” said Dr Martin Buuck, a UK medical professor who is an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Manchester. “We believe this settlement will protect GSK and the rest of the industry from going to court to pay for the quality of our drugs.”
GSK, based in London, has agreed to pay $500m to settle a suit brought by the drug giant against AstraZeneca in October 2013, claiming AstraZeneca failed to adequately warn patients about its risks to heart and liver function.
It also agreed to pay $3.4bn to settle a case brought by AstraZeneca against GSK in 2015.
The suit claims GSK failed to conduct adequate testing on patients to ensure their safety and efficacy in the treatment of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder. It also contends that GSK failed to conduct adequate warnings about the potential risks associated with Seroquel XR to patients.
GSK is seeking a maximum payment of £1.2bn, in the UK.
The settlement could be subject to an agreement that GSK has reached with AstraZeneca to settle a suit in which it is the manufacturer of Seroquel XR.
In March 2014, GSK, the company’s largest pharma player, agreed to pay £1.2bn (£0.2bn) to settle a suit in which it was the manufacturer of Seroquel XR. AstraZeneca agreed to pay a total of £2.9bn (£1.9bn) in cash.
The settlement would have required GSK to pay £1.4bn in settlements to settle a case brought by AstraZeneca in 2016, the company said in a statement.
The agreement also meant that GSK will pay £1.1bn in settlements to GSK in the UK and the US.
GSK, which has been in the business for more than 20 years, has had cash flow problems for many years and has been struggling to make ends meet to cash flow problems.
However, GSK has a history of failing to meet the growing demands of the pharma industry, including to keep up with new growth.
Last year, the company said it would lose an estimated 10,000 jobs as it faced the financial crisis.
Last year GSK said it had agreed to pay $1.1bn to settle a case in which it had been accused of causing diabetes, a condition which could cause a fatal heart attack.
GSK’s share of the global pharmaceutical company has been worth more than $3.9bn (£1.9bn) in 2013.
GSK also recently agreed to pay a £2.1bn (£1.2bn) to settle a similar case in which GSK had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor.
GSK’s global pharmaceutical unit, which is now valued at more than $5.3bn, has been on the market since 2004 and is expected to lose roughly 20% of its market share in the next few years.
Last year GSK said it would pay about $1.5bn (£1.2bn) to settle a suit in which it was accused of causing diabetes, a condition which could cause a fatal heart attack.
The settlement was expected to include some provisions such as the payment of $1.
